The soul of Bengali vegetarian cooking and lentil dishes! Shosti Five Spice Mix, locally known as Panch Phoron, is a colorful, aromatic whole spice blend. Unlike ground masalas, these whole seeds are tempered in hot oil or ghee to release an explosion of sweet, earthy, and pungent flavors. Absolutely no preservatives or artificial colors.

Cooking Ingredients Needed:

  • Any Daal (Lentils) or Mixed Vegetables

  • Cooking Oil or Ghee

  • Shosti Five Spice Mix (1/2 to 1 teaspoon)

  • Dry red chilies, Bay leaves

Preparation Method & Cooking Procedure:

  1. Prepare your desired daal or vegetable dish and set aside.

  2. In a separate small pan, heat a few tablespoons of oil or ghee.

  3. Add dry red chilies, bay leaves, and 1 teaspoon of Shosti Five Spice Mix.

  4. Let the seeds sizzle and pop for 10-15 seconds (do not let them burn).

  5. Pour this tempered, highly aromatic oil (bagar) directly over your cooked daal or vegetables. Stir immediately and cover with a lid to trap the aroma.
